The Synthetic Aggregate Waterfall Page

The Synthetic Aggregate Waterfall is accessible through the main left navigation in the BT Portal. Go to synthetic Monitoring, Real Browser, and click on Aggregate Waterfall (Object Level Trending). 

How to Navigate the Synthetic Aggregate Waterfall Page

Domain Level Detail Graph

The first thing you’ll see on this page is the Domain Level Activity Graph. This graph is formatted as a waterfall, depicting the amount of time each domain was loading on average during the time period. Items will appear colored based on where they tend to load in the order of events, during the full page load. You can see in the legend how this is shown.

You can also view this data in a table format, by clicking between the graph and table icons.

In the table view you will see % Impact, % of Onload Activity, Impact Score, and Tag Quality.

This is the breakdown for the Impact score: 

• 50% < frown face
• 10-15% < neutral face < 50%
• Smile face < 10-15%
•  

You’ll see an icon next to each domain allowing you to open the trend of that particular domain.

This graph shows the amount of time each object call spent loading, on average, during the time period. Switch between this graph and the Domain Level Activity Graph by clicking these tabs at the top of the page.

Object Level Detail Graph

This graph shows the amount of time each object call spent loading, on average, during the time period. Switch between this graph and the Domain Level Activity Graph by clicking these tabs at the top of the page.

Function Tracing Graph

The Function Tracing graph highlights when functions are exhibiting chronic slowness. While the Domain and Object Level waterfalls are optimized for page metrics like page onload, first paint, DOM interactive, etc., the Function Tracing waterfall is optimized for highlighting Time To Interactive. TTI requires visibility into what JavaScript functions are running slow.

Function Tracing and Object Level Detail

This waterfall gives combines Object Level Detail and Function Tracing into one waterfall.

You can also view this data in a table format, by clicking between the graph and table icons. 

This way, you’ll see an icon next to each domain allowing you to open the trend of that particular domain.

Resource Timings by File Graphs

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can see a table showing the resource timings by file. Here we can see which domain each resource belongs to, how many times this resource was observed (or element count), and more timing information.

Pie Charts

To toggle the pie charts click the button at the top right of the page.

Running Comparisons

Back a the top of the page, you will see a “Run Comparison” button. This enables you to compare the aggregate waterfall for two different time periods. To do this, click the button and change the date for comparison. You’ll be comparing against the data already on the page.

Once you have your new time period and filtering selections ready, click Apply Filters for Comparison. The comparison graph will load to the right. We also see a summary in the middle showing What’s Changed.

Below are two tables, one showing the duration for each item and the other showing the element count for each item. Toggle these tables with the button indicated in the screenshot below.
